Chow Poem
God was finishing his creations when an angel walked past.
God said to the angel "the best will be last.
This animal we create will be loyal and true,
with a heart of pure gold and we'll paint his mouth blue.
He'll have great intelligence and a mystery within,
and when we finish his face, we'll give him a grin.
God finished his creation then knelt on one knee,
and whispered to him what his purpose would be.
"You will take man, my love, when I set you free,
then turn one ear and listen for me.
I've given you a coat that will make kings bow.
For this you'll be captured and known as "The Chow"

I Don't Trust You
I don’t trust you,
You don’t know what happened before,
Oh yes I still remember,
Avert my glance to the floor.
Don’t raise your arm, I don’t like it,
Reminds me of things in my past,
Of days that would last forever,
Of me, bedraggled, outcast.
My eyes may say that I like you,
But to me they’re a vacant stare,
That day that my tormenter left me,
Oh no, you were not there. |
My stomach still grips and it rumbles,
Each time a leads tied to my throat,
No food in my tummy for days then,
My hair just fell from my coat.
The scars are so deep in my mind now,
I’m a breed that is genteel and kind,
Don’t know why my tormentor hurt me,
But my fear of male humans refined.
I don’t trust you, but I’ll never bite you,
I wont growl or snarl in your face,
But the days when I have to remember,
Just please, please give me some space.

The Loss of a Heart-Dog
I stood by your bed last night,
I came to have a peep
I could see that you were crying,
you found it hard to sleep
I whined to you softly as
you brushed away a tear,
"it's me, I haven't left,
I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"
I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea
You were thinking of the many times,
your hands reached down to me
I was with you at the shops today,
your arms were getting sore
I longed to take your parcels,
I wish you could do more
I was with you at my grave today,
you tend it with such care
I want to reassure you,
that I'm not lying there |
I walked with you towards the house,
as you fumbled for your key
I gently put my paw on you,
I smiled and said "it's me"
You look so very tired,
and sank into a chair
I tried so hard to let you know,
that I was standing there
It's possible for me,
to be so near you everyday
To say to you with certainty,
"I never went away"
You sat there very quietly,
then smiled, I think you knew
In the stillness of that evening,
I was very close to you.
